Many women in East Africa dress in lovely, colorful
Kanga as if to compete than meets the eye. Taking a closer look at the Kanga.
One can observe a Swahili quotation in a text box barely visible in the arabesques
of the pattern.
Messages are what it is all about. They can be a universal
proverb, a riddle an insult or ardent love declarations.
The women dressed in Kanga are in a magnetic field of
communication and sometimes in a high tensioned battlefield. The African woman
selects her Kanga according to text before colour and pattern. And thus the
slogan is an important element of Kanga.
Kangas are bought in pairs. Two identical rectangular
pieces of cotton material with a wide border around a central motif, they are
of various designs, and have bold colors. One Kanga is traditionally wrapped
around the body - the other one draped over the head. But variations are numerous.
Kangas are of ethical value, it's slogans in Kiswahili
and designs depict the moods and the lifestyles of African people. They are
more or less a part of life. When a woman becomes a mother she receives a Kanga
from the baby' father saying for example : NANI KAMA NAMA (who is like a mother).
The baby is born in to a soft cotton of Kanga, worn out, soft straps of Kanga
can be used as nappies and the baby is of course carried in - a Kanga! Right
from the start a child must adjust to a lifelong co-existence with Kangas.
There are Kangas for all important rituals in life, from birth to death, for
prayers, celebration and for exorcism. There are different Kangas for sleep,
for kitchen for dancing etc. Kangas are especially in Tanzania, used for education
and political slogans.
Rich and poor, urban and rural woman, secretaries, doctors,
lawyers, muslim and christian - everybody uses Kangas, a fashion which has spread
far into the hinterland of the East African coast. It is also becoming popular
among Tourist.
The Kanga has more uses than one can imagine. Some of
them are as follows: A Traditional Dress, Traditional Skirt, Traditional Dance
Costume, A Headpiece, Traditional Baby carry, Wall Hanging, Bedspread, Towel,
Curtains, Seat Cover, Mosquito net, Table Cloth, Bedding, Sail, Windscreen,
Diapers, Mop, Rug, Aprons, Belts, Folds and Knots and many more.
Whether one likes it or not, the Kangas seems to survive
by adopting to changing lifestyles - even in East Africa where garments have
been widely influenced by European fashion. This could be because the Kanga
- apart from many other qualities - comments and discusses matters of importance
such as, love, religion, politics and morals in very down to earth manner.
